If you are planning to acquire any breed of swans for your private property and or business, and since we ship our birds across the entire United States, it is advisable to check with your States Wildlife Management Services such as the DNR. In Indiana you are currently allowed to keep captive Mute Swans. However there a two important requirements. First, all captive Mute Swans must be pinioned. Second, the owner must keep records of all their Swans and their offspring they may produce. That means if you purchase a Mute Swan, the breeder has to keep this record, and the purchaser has to keep a record. This is required to help ensure no ferrule populations of Mute Swans occur. Almost ALL states view the Mute Swan as an invasive species. Sadly, this means a governing body, or a private land owner, can apply for a permit to eliminate Mute Swans. Never let your cygnets go unpinioned! Most will die within the 1st year of life due to lack of food and or the cold. They have never been taught to migrate by their parents. If you have cycnets and need to sell them, please let us know and we will either buy them, or find someone close to you who would like to purchase them. Currently the Black Australian Swans have no restrictions, in any State that we know of. Since they are a warm weather species, few survive northern winter months. Trumpeter Swans are protected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Never, ever, purchase a Trumpeter Swan unless you recieve a Sale/disposal form from the breeder! Since Trumpetrs are protected, the seller must have a Federal License to house, breed, sell or dispose of Trumpeter Swans. The buyer doesn't have to have a permit, just the seller. The seller has to meet strict requirements for this permit. This somewhat explains why the cost of Trumpeters is so high.
Mute/Trumpeter/Australian Black Swans: Why purchase your swans from us? We consider ourselves a small breeder. And we will always be a small breeder. We do not breed any other waterfowl except Swans. By doing this it allows us to focus all of our attention on our Swans. We are a two person operation with no desire to expand. We do get help from our four Grandchildren that live next door on occasion:) Mute Swans are not community breeders. They need their own space, and a rather large one at that, on a body of water that allows them to live and breed as close to their natural setting as possible. The Australian Black Swan will breed in groups and sometimes produce a clutch two times a year unlike the Mute Swan which only produce one clutch a year. Winter months are the only time that multiple swans occupy the same water on our farm. Larger breeders breed all kinds of waterfowl and sometimes keep their swans in a pen, never giving them a chance to live in their natural habitat. This results in later breeding (at least 3 years if not more). Most of our pairs breed at 3 years and I believe this is due to keeping them in their natural habitat. However, just because you have a male and female swan doesn't necessarily mean you will have cygnets! Most will but some simply are fertile. Please don't misunderstand! I believe there are several large breeders that are good, caring, responsible breeders! We love each and every one of our swans and feel what's best for them is best for us. All of our swans are free range. This does increase the challenges of breeding swans. Predators are the biggest issue along with the weather being a close second. In northern Indiana, it gets below zero in the winter! ALL our Swans are pinioned before they reach 14 days old. Cygnets are capable of flight at 120 days old! Proper pinioning is the ONLY way to ensure they never fly away. Don't believe anyone who tells you if they never learn to fly, they will never fly away! I get several calls a year from individuals whose swans simply flew away because they weren't properly pinioned! Most importantly, we want to talk to you to make sure swans are a good fit for your private pond or business, and you have the financial means to properly care for them. We feel all of this makes us one of the best Swan breeders not only in Indiana but throughout the entire United States!
Availability: Due to our limited number of Swans produced each year, and our constantly changing inventory, please call/contact us so we both can make sure that Swans are a good fit for your property! We require a $500 deposit on all puchases. My swans produce a certain number of cygnets per year. Normally by March/April, I have received deposits for all my swans. We sell them on a first come first serve basis so please don't wait until June to contact us looking for swans. Normally we can accommodate just about any request. We will NOT ship our birds USPS or before they are at least 5 months old. We will only ship via Delta cargo to major aiports. All quoted pricing will NOT include shipping charges. As of June 2024 the cost is $400 per swan. Sometimes two swans (only Australian Blacks) can be shipped together in one crate.
